More than 200 sports people banned for more than 10 years


When weightlifting coach Michael Gingras was banned for 12 years, he became part of the more than 200 sports persons who has been sanctioned with a ban longer than ten years.

 

Gingras was given a 12 year suspension by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Four persons has so far been given such a lengthy suspension. In weightlifting there are so far only two persons who has been given a 12 year ban. Gingras is of course the latest. Before him the Iranian weightlifter Saeid Ali-Hosseini was banned back in 20090 after testing positive for methandienone. More than 200 athletes banned for life Most of the athletes who has a longer suspension than ten years are banned for life. 24 of these are Russian athletes, while 20 are from the US. United Kingdom and Czech Republic have both ten athletes who has been banned for life. So far in 2017 there has been four athletes banned for life. Most lifetime suspensions in athletics Currently we have registered close to 70 cases where an athlete in the sport of athletics was given a lifetime suspension. That is close to twice as many lifetime suspended athletes in cycling where there are currently 39 cyclists banned for life. Weightlifting has given the lifetime suspension to 34 athletes so far.
